COMING OCTOBER 2026
MORONGO VALLEY, CALIFORIA

WHAT IS FIELD SESSIONS?
A creative writing group driven by an ongoing conversation between landscape and language.
Once a month, at sunset, we gather at the mouth of Coil Canyon in Morongo Valley,
where the desert opens toward the vast San Gorgonio Wilderness.
Several weeks beforehand, a writing prompt is released through our website and social media.
An invitation for all to participate.
The prompt is carried into daily life, gathering meaning through meditation, observation, memory, conversation, and chance.
By the time we return to the canyon, each person arrives with their own unique interpretation.
As the sun finds its way behind the canyon, we read our works aloud for one another.
Poems. Songs. Essays. Fragments. Field notes. First drafts. Finished pieces.
It is not completion that matters, but attention and intention.
Bring a notebook, a page, a passage, or simply a willingness to listen.
The canyon offers the constant and container.
We return each month to discover what has changed….the season, the light, or maybe ourselves?!
Together we witness one another's work and cultivate a creative practice rooted in place.
Our words become offerings to the canyon - creative acts of observation, change, and exploration.
At the close of each writing fseason together, Field Sessions will compile a retrospective: a collection of voices shaped by a shared landscape and a year's worth of returning.
Throughout the year, Field Sessions expands beyond writing. Long-table dinners beneath the desert sky. Music carried into the canyon. Dancing after dusk. Sculpture residencies. Workshops. Visiting writers. Gatherings that blur the boundaries between art forms and invite new ways of paying attention and experiencing our creative lives.
The desert has always been a place of observation and introspection.
Field Sessions offers a another way of paying attention to land, language and one another.

MANIFESTO

PLACE:
The canyon is our container.
Every landscape carries its own rhythms, memories, and ways of seeing.
Field Sessions believes place can be more than just a setting, but an active collaborator in the creative process.

PRACTICE:
Returning is our discipline.
Creativity is not measured by productivity or perfection, but by the willingness to return.
We believe a creative life is cultivated through sustained curiosity, close observation, and the simple act of showing up.

COMMUNITY:
Witnessing is our community.
Creative work flourishes when it is shared with generosity and received with care.
Field Sessions is a communiy where every voice is welcomed, every piece is honored, and every participant is both maker and witness.

ABOUT FIELD SESSIONS
Field Sessions was founded by Aimee Kirby, of Ferox Studio, a multidisciplinary design practice that moves fluidly between exterior and interior environments.
For years, Aimee's professional work has centered on cultivating meaningful relationships between people and place. Field Sessions emerged as a natural extension of that practice, a place where creativity could move beyond spatial design and into writing, conversation, music, shared meals, and artistic exchange.
Set within Coil Canyon in Morongo Valley, California, the gathering invites the landscape itself to become an active participant in the creative process. The canyon is more than a backdrop; it is intended as a vessel for observation, reflection, and connection.
The vision for Field Sessions was crystallized after Aimee attended a writing retreat on the island of Patmos, Greece, hosted by Good World Journeys. Experiencing the profound relationship between landscape, language, and community revealed what becomes possible when people gather with intention around creative practice. Returning home to the Mojave Desert, she felt called to create something rooted in the character of her own landscape, influenced by her experience in the Aegean Sea, but driven by the ethereal magic of the high desert.
Field Sessions is that offering: an ongoing conversation between landscape and language, and an invitation for creative voices to gather, return, and belong.
